Ask the Start Up Companies Expert – Colby Krall

I have always dreamed of being a businessman one day and after growing up on a farm being able to take the lead I could not work for someone as an employee and needed to do things myself. In 2014, I bought my first dump truck in hopes to make a little side cash while attending college in Grande Prairie. I come from a trucking family, as my dad had winch trucks back in Peace River and had always took interest in the line of work he did. I figured if he could be successful at it that I would take a stab. After endless days and hours building the company, searching for work and taking on odd jobs around the city I realized that this would go nowhere if I kept doing small odd jobs for the locals, I needed something more that would do more than just keep the bills paid. Before Christmas, I decided I needed to find work in the oilfield and take on larger jobs. January 2015, I had gotten a call from a guy wanting some snow hauled for a few days to the pipeline for an ice crossing. He had asked for six trucks and at that time I only had one and had little resources for finding others that would be willing to work for me. I searched some names on Yellow Pages and got a few companies to join me on board.

This two day job lasted from January 6, 2015 to the end of May. In that time we had hauled snow for ice crossings, and hauled sand and gravel to the pipeline. At times there was up to 17 trucks contracted under me working for this job. It gave me the opportunity to work with some of the communities most respected companies in the business and really helped kick start the company and get the Thatchwood name out there. Working alongside me as I took this project on with a fellow companion was a well-known entrepreneur, Mel Toerper, who I look up to as mentor and showed me the ropes of how to do business and what to expect in the oilfield. If it wasn’t for him I would not have had the success I did in the winter. Needless to say everyone that helped did a great job and it paid off.

Since then, I have been able to work alongside many of the people that I had hired the previous winter and it has given me the opportunity to expand and take on new customers. This spring I had expanded my fleet as I purchased a new semi, two dump trailers, and quad wagon that has broaden the ability to provide better and efficient services to my customers. The opportunity I had this winter has given me the chance to prove young entrepreneurs do have the capability to compete in this industry if they work hard enough at it.
